What is microneedling and how does it work?
Microneedling โ also called collagen induction therapy โ uses a professional device fitted with ultra-fine needles to create thousands of tiny micro-channels in the surface of the skin. This sounds more dramatic than it feels. In practice, the device glides across the skin and the micro-injuries it creates are so small they're invisible to the naked eye.
The real magic happens in the hours and days that follow. Your body recognises these micro-injuries as a signal to repair, flooding the treated area with collagen and elastin โ the proteins responsible for firm, plump, youthful-looking skin. Over a course of treatments, this process can visibly improve texture, tone, fine lines, scarring and overall skin quality.
At Samsara Aesthetics in Derby, we offer three levels of microneedling: Basic Microneedling with a Glow Serum, Luxury Microneedling with Salmon DNA and LED therapy, and a combined BioRePeel and Microneedling treatment for more intensive results.
Before your appointment
Consultation first
Every microneedling appointment at Samsara begins with a full consultation. This isn't a quick tick-box exercise โ Sara will take time to assess your skin, understand your concerns and goals, and confirm that microneedling is the right treatment for you. If you have any active breakouts, skin infections, or certain skin conditions, treatment may need to be postponed. This is why the consultation matters.
What to do in the days before
To get the most from your treatment and reduce the chance of any sensitivity, we recommend the following in the 48โ72 hours before your appointment:
- Avoid retinol, vitamin A, and strong exfoliating acids (AHAs, BHAs)
- Don't use any harsh scrubs or peeling treatments
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning beds
- Stay well hydrated โ skin that's in good condition responds better to treatment
- Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup if possible
If you're unsure about any products you use regularly, just ask at your consultation โ Sara will advise you.
โฆ Good to know
Microneedling is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for those with certain skin conditions or medications. Your consultation will cover all of this.
On the day โ what actually happens
Numbing cream
Around 20โ30 minutes before the treatment begins, a topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area. This significantly reduces any discomfort during the procedure. You'll simply relax while it takes effect โ a good opportunity to discuss your aftercare plan with Sara.
The treatment itself
Once the numbing cream is removed, the microneedling device is passed across the skin in careful, even strokes. Most clients describe the sensation as a mild pressure or vibration โ occasionally a little more sensitive in certain areas such as around the nose or forehead, but manageable for the vast majority of people.
The treatment typically takes around 45 minutes to an hour in total, depending on which option you've chosen. If you've booked Luxury Microneedling, Salmon DNA serum is applied topically during the treatment to be absorbed through the micro-channels, followed by LED light therapy to help calm the skin and support the healing process.
Immediately after
When you look in the mirror straight after your treatment, your skin will appear red โ similar to a moderate sunburn. This is completely expected and is actually a sign that the treatment is working. Some clients also notice minor swelling or a warm sensation in the skin. A soothing serum is applied at the end of the treatment to help calm and hydrate the skin before you leave.
โฆ Good to know
Plan to go home after your appointment. Most clients wouldn't want to go straight to a social event looking flushed โ though the redness does settle significantly within a few hours.
The recovery โ what to expect over the following days
Day 1โ2: Redness and sensitivity
The redness and mild swelling you leave the clinic with will typically settle considerably within 24 hours, and for most clients is largely resolved by 48 hours. Your skin may feel tight, dry or slightly sensitive during this period. Avoid touching your face unnecessarily, and keep your skincare routine simple โ gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturiser, and SPF.
Day 3โ5: Skin renewal
Some clients notice a little light flaking or micro-peeling during this stage as the skin begins to renew itself. This is normal and should not be picked at or aggressively exfoliated โ let your skin shed naturally. Your skin may also feel slightly congested or bumpy briefly during this phase, which typically resolves on its own.
Day 5 onwards: The glow
By the end of the first week, most clients start to notice their skin looking clearer, smoother and more radiant. This is just the beginning โ collagen production continues to build for weeks and months after treatment, with the most significant results visible 4โ6 weeks after each session.
Aftercare โ the rules to follow
Following your aftercare instructions carefully is essential to getting the best results and avoiding complications. Here's what to stick to:
- No makeup for 24 hours โ your skin needs to breathe and heal
- SPF every day โ your skin is more sensitive to UV following treatment. Use a broad spectrum SPF 30+ for at least two weeks
- No gym, sauna or swimming for 48 hours โ heat and sweat can increase irritation and infection risk
- No retinol, acids or active ingredients for 5โ7 days โ keep it gentle until the skin has healed
- Keep it simple โ gentle cleanser and a good hydrating moisturiser is all you need for the first week
Sara will provide full written aftercare guidance at your appointment, so you'll have everything you need to refer back to.
How many sessions will I need?
This is one of the most common questions โ and the honest answer is that it depends on what you're looking to achieve. For general skin rejuvenation, brightening and early fine lines, many clients see meaningful results after 3 sessions spaced 4โ6 weeks apart. For more established concerns such as acne scarring, deeper lines or more significant textural issues, a course of 4โ6 sessions is more typical.
Results are progressive โ each session builds on the last, and collagen production continues to improve in the weeks after treatment. Most clients choose to maintain their results with top-up sessions every 3โ6 months after completing a course.
โฆ Sara's tip
Consistency matters more than frequency. Three sessions done properly, spaced correctly, with good aftercare will always outperform six rushed sessions with poor preparation.
Is microneedling right for me?
Microneedling suits a wide range of skin types and concerns. It can be particularly effective for:
- Fine lines and early signs of ageing
- Acne scarring and post-breakout marks
- Uneven skin texture or enlarged pores
- Dull, tired-looking skin
- Pigmentation and uneven skin tone
- General skin quality and radiance
It is not suitable for everyone โ those with active acne, certain skin conditions, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding will need to consider alternative options. The best way to find out if microneedling is right for your skin is to come in for a free consultation at Samsara Aesthetics in Chaddesden, Derby.
